Why do you assume we have only a single past? You can restore symmetry by allowing the possible pasts to superimpose whenever they match all the surviving information.
So if you dig a hole in your back garden, until you've done it, even the universe doesn't know whether you'll find soil, dog bones or an unexploded WWII bomb. The "thin, hard line of fact" is just an assumption and not the only possibility.
