I don't know if this is apposite in any way but as soon as I saw your "a long time ago, I had a girlfriend...." these American Pie lyrics started buzzing in my head:

A long, long time ago, I can still remember

How that music used to make me smile

And I knew if I had my chance

That I could make those people dance

And maybe they'd be happy for a while.....

Very moving post by the way

I love that song too, Graham.

I met a girl who sang the blues

And I asked her for some happy news.

But she just smiled and turned away.

Thank you, Murphy. It still brings me to tears every time, 32 years later.

Wow, this hit hard. Powerful and inspiring. I'm eager to read more of your posts. Perhaps you've mentioned this elsewhere, but have you read 'Mortality' by Christopher Hitchens? I've long been a fan of his and I'm not going to say I *enjoyed* it, but I've read it twice and it's...a gripping read, to say the least.

I read some of his essays from near the end. I didn't read his book.

Hi, I just wanted to tell you I found this very moving. And your procrastination essay too. I went to sleep last night thinking about them. I wish you all the best.

Thank you, Bess. Despite the sad times that it came from, it's a very happy memory for me. I relive it often.
